40 Years in Retail: A Journey of Passion

On May 28th, Bentley’s President & CEO, Walter Lamothe, received the 2024 Retail Council of Canada’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Following this esteemed recognition, Mr. Lamothe delivered an inspiring address on the importance of passion in the retail industry.

Lessons Learned in Retail Leadership

“Follow your passion” is some advice we often give to the young. But what does it mean in practice? For me, a farm boy who briefly ventured into pipeline work for its promise of good pay, I quickly realized that my heart wasn’t in it. 

My true calling became clear when I started as a stock boy in retail. Despite the modest pay, the job offered a wealth of learning opportunities. Surrounded by the passionate souls of the retail world, I found my place. 

Retail is a challenging arena, where victories are fleeting. You savor each success, knowing well that new challenges are just around the corner. After decades in this field, I’ve learned that the key to longevity is continuous learning – adapting to the industry’s rapid changes. This knowledge is what I plan to share over the next 15-20 years. 

Reflecting on the teams I’ve been part of—both past and present—I’m grateful for the shared enthusiasm for retail. In the competitive Canadian market, you must excel to be recognized. Even then, reinvention is a constant necessity. 

For those wondering if retail is their path, consider this: if you’re resilient, the rewards are extraordinary. The industry’s hurdles are a complex puzzle, often dictated by rules beyond our control, and sometimes you’ll find pieces missing. But that’s the thrill of retail—it’s a dynamic, ever-changing puzzle. 

These years have been a passionate odyssey for me. Receiving the Retail Council of Canada’s Lifetime Achievement Award is not a conclusion but a milestone. I cherish this honour and am committed to continuing my support for the industry and its passionate individuals.
